Egyptian Gov. Rejects Criticism by UN Rights Investigator Unprecedented Report on Egypt considered at UN Rights Council: Government rejects Criticism by UN Rights Investigator (9 March, 2010 – Geneva) Egypt’s use of the Emergency Law to justify arbitrary detention and the use of exceptional courts was examined before the UN Human Rights Council today in a ground-breaking report presented by Martin Scheinin, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism. The report is the first issued by the main human rights body of the United Nations that deals exclusively with the human rights situation in Egypt. Representatives from the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies attended the session in Geneva as observers and delivered oral interventions in which they supported the report’s recommendations and urged the government to implement them immediately. In his report, based on a mission to Egypt in April 2009, Mr. Scheinin highlighted that administrative detention orders repealed by the judiciary in Egypt are often “renewed immediately upon a person’s release or, in the worst case, just ignored through unacknowledged detention until a new order of official administrative detention is obtained.” The report of the Special Rapporteur also expressed concern over the fact that Egypt’s Emergency Law is often applied in situations where there is no link to terrorist activities, such as the frequent arbitrary detention of political activists and bloggers and the repeated use of military courts and state security courts in politically motivated cases. The Special Rapporteur also emphasized that when combined with the pending counter-terrorism law, Article 179 of the Egyptian Constitution as amended in March 2007 would create a permanent legal state of emergency...

This week Kidnapping and torturing Dr.Taha Abdel-Tawab, a supporter of Dr. Elbaradei for the Egyptian presidency election by the Egyptian security policeIn the first sharp escalation against the supporters of Dr ElBaradei, and after Mubarak remarks that he does not mind the nomination of Dr.ElBaradei.Dr.Taha Abdel Tawab a doctor of physiotherapy-El Fayoum city, was kidnapped, tortured, stripped of his clothes, threatened to be killed, and then thrown in a miserable state in the street by the Egyptian security police that terrifies every bloger,network writer,and opposition supporters. That was to stop him from supporting Dr.ElBaradei and to stop |him from collecting signatures from his supporters and also to terrify all other supporters. Dr.Taha Abdel Tawab was participating in organizing a conference to support the constitutional reforms advocated by Dr. Elbaradei. The conference was corrupted by the authorities through the use of thugs and bullying against the attendees, under thefull auspices of the authorities. This illegal unconstitutional blatantassault is an aggression and violation of human rights. We call on all activists, movements, parties, and human rights organizations in the world to take action against this aggressive act against the doctor who just tried to exercise his constitutional rights and became a victim of such special procedures, and the law of emergency applied by the gangs of Egyptian government regime against the freedom of speech and expression " Lieutenant-Colonel Mohammed Abdel Tawab was the security police officer that exerted the inhuman torture and stippng him of victim clothes.We call on the Egyptian and international human rights organizations and the Egyptian government to take the necessary actions in a fair investigation and trial for Dr.Taha Abd el TawabNow The Status of the victim had become worse because of the strike of food until bringing his rightsI condmn the Egyptian security police action and hope to investigate such a case and urge the Egyptian Interrior minister and the government to stop such actions against innocent civilian Egyptian people.
